{"id":318,"date":"2013-03-05T18:22:35","date_gmt":"2013-03-06T02:22:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mmoutreach.org\/tg\/?p=318"},"modified":"2018-04-06T14:41:35","modified_gmt":"2018-04-06T22:41:35","slug":"come-john6-37","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mmoutreach.org\/tg\/come-john6-37\/","title":{"rendered":"John 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-330\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/all-come.jpg?resize=640%2C426\" alt=\"All will Come on The Giving Blog by Cheryl Schatz\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/all-come.jpg?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/all-come.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>John 6:37 All that the Father Gives Me<\/h1>\n<h2>The Promise<\/h2>\n<p>Jesus gives an amazing promise in John 6:37~<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">John 6:37 (NASB) \u201c<strong>All<\/strong> that the Father <strong>gives<\/strong> Me will come to Me&#8230;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Jesus promises <em><strong>all<\/strong><\/em> that the Father <em><strong>gives<\/strong><\/em>&#8230; Let&#8217;s start our search into this passage by looking at the terms &#8220;all&#8221; and &#8220;gives.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>All<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">What does &#8220;all&#8221; mean in this context? \u00a0Does all mean some? \u00a0In other words, is Jesus saying that <em><strong>some<\/strong><\/em> of what the Father gives Him will come to Him? Not at all. \u00a0I think we can safely say from the context because the Father&#8217;s will is expressed in the passage, that all simply means all without exception within the group of those who are given.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Gives<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Since &#8220;all&#8221; is that which is given, what is the meaning of the term gives? The grammar will help us to understand. The term &#8220;gives&#8221; in the Greek is in the<em> present, active, indicative<\/em>. The present means that the action is in <\/span>process<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> without an assessment of the action&#8217;s completion. Gives as the present tense means that God is <em><strong>presently giving<\/strong><\/em> and is <em><strong>continuing<\/strong><\/em> to give. Notice that the grammar is not eternity past, but rather the &#8220;now.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><!--more-->The Greek term for &#8220;gives&#8221; means to entrust someone to another&#8217;s care. Here is a copy of the BDAG lexicon on this entry:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-343\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/gives-John-6-37.jpg?resize=640%2C250\" alt=\"John 6:37 All that the Father gives to the Son\" width=\"640\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/gives-John-6-37.jpg?w=672&amp;ssl=1 672w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/gives-John-6-37.jpg?resize=300%2C116&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Those who are given to Jesus are entrusted to His care.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><em>From<\/em> Whom and <em>to<\/em> Whom?<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">John 6:37 (NASB) \u201cAll\u00a0that the<strong>Father<\/strong><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>gives\u00a0<strong>Me<\/strong> will come to Me&#8230;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Jesus said that it is the Father who is the <em><strong>Giver<\/strong><\/em> and Jesus is the <em><strong>Receiver<\/strong><\/em>. The Father will most certainly give, and the Son will most certainly receive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Paying attention to the grammar, we can see that John 6:37 shows that the Father is presently entrusting and continues to entrust people to the care of Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Will come<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">John 6:37 (NASB) \u201cAll\u00a0that the<em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Father<em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>gives\u00a0Me\u00a0<strong>will come<\/strong> to Me&#8230;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The term &#8220;will come&#8221; is future, active, indicative. So while we know that the context is the Father giving in the present time and continuing to give, &#8220;the coming&#8221; that Jesus is talking about is presented as future, as an action that people will do themselves in a future time. Jesus now changes the tense to present.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Who comes<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0John 6:37 (NASB) \u201c&#8230; and the one <strong>who comes<\/strong> to Me I will certainly not cast out.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Jesus now speaks about those who are presently coming. &#8220;Who comes&#8221; is present, active, indicative, substantival participle. \u00a0The present tense means that it is happening when it was written, and it continues to happen with no assessment of the action&#8217;s completion. The substantival participle is a participle that is being used as a noun. Thus the one who <\/span>comes,<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> is the &#8220;coming one&#8221; who continues to come. It is the one who <strong>continues to come<\/strong> who will certainly not be cast out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Does God give God haters to Jesus?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The question that John 6:37 brings up, is who are those who are given to Jesus? Are those given, people who hate God? Or are the ones given, people who already belong to the Father, who already fear God, and so they are ready to be given to Jesus? The Old Testament gives us the answer to this question.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Malachi 3:16\u201318 (NASB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for <strong>those who fear the LORD and who esteem His name<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">17 \u201c<strong>They will be Mine<\/strong>,\u201d says the LORD of hosts, \u201con the day that I prepare <strong>My own possession<\/strong>, and I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">18 So you will again <strong>distinguish between the righteous and the wicked<\/strong>, between <strong>one who serves God and one who does not serve Him<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Who are those who will be God&#8217;s possession? They are the one&#8217;s who feared the LORD. God said that there will be a distinguishing made between the wicked, those who do not fear God, and the righteous, those who fear the LORD. Only those who fear the LORD will belong to God. &#8220;They will be mine,&#8221; He said, and &#8220;I will spare them.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Another direct reference is Psalm 25:12-14.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Psalm 25:12\u201314 (NASB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">12 Who is the man who fears the LORD? He will instruct him in the way he should choose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">13 His soul will abide in prosperity, And his descendants will inherit the land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">14 The <strong>secret<\/strong> of the LORD is for those who fear Him, And He will <strong>make them know His covenant<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The secret of the LORD<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The secret of the LORD is the act or state of intimacy and trust. God reserves this for those who fear Him. Here is the term &#8220;secret&#8221; in the BDAG lexicon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-349\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/ps-25-14-secret.jpg?resize=604%2C156\" alt=\"Psalm 25:14 The Secret of the Lord\" width=\"604\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/ps-25-14-secret.jpg?w=604&amp;ssl=1 604w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/ps-25-14-secret.jpg?resize=300%2C77&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The <strong>secret<\/strong> of the LORD (His state of intimacy and trust with them) is not for those who hate Him but is reserved for those who fear Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>He will make them know<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The Hebrew term to &#8220;know&#8221; can be a very strong word that expresses intimacy, and a deep understanding. It can also mean to choose something for a special favor. Below is from\u00a0Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains: Hebrew (Old Testament)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-351\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/know2-Ps-15-14.jpg?resize=640%2C103\" alt=\"Psalm 25:14 He will make them know His covenant\" width=\"640\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/know2-Ps-15-14.jpg?w=1028&amp;ssl=1 1028w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/know2-Ps-15-14.jpg?resize=300%2C48&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mmoutreach.org\/tg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/know2-Ps-15-14.jpg?resize=1024%2C164&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">God Himself will make those who fear Him to &#8220;know&#8221; His covenant. What is God&#8217;s covenant that will be made intimately known to those who fear God?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>I will give You for a covenant<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">An amazing prophecy of the Lord Jesus Christ is found in Isaiah 49:8.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Isaiah 49:8 (NASB)\u00a0Thus says the LORD, \u201cIn a favorable time I have answered You, And in a day of salvation I have helped You; And <strong>I will keep You and give You for a covenant of the people<\/strong>, To restore the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritages;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The LORD said that He will give You (the Messiah) as a covenant for the people. Thus those who fear God will be given the covenant.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>John 6:37 as a fulfilled prophecy from the Old Testament<\/h2>\n<p>God promised in the Old Testament, that those who fear Him will be given an intimate relationship with Him and will be given the covenant (Jesus). \u00a0In the New Testament, in a fulfilment of the Old Testament, those who feared God were brought to Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><em><strong>Cornelius<\/strong><\/em>, a God-fearer, was given to Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Acts 10:1\u20132 (NASB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">1 Now there was a man at Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">2 a devout man and one <strong>who feared God with all his household<\/strong>, and gave many alms to the Jewish people and prayed to God continually.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">And <em><strong>Lydia<\/strong><\/em> was given to Jesus when God opened her heart to respond to the message of the gospel.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Acts 16:14\u201315 (NASB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">14 A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, <strong>a worshiper of God<\/strong>, was listening; and <strong>the Lord opened her heart<\/strong> to respond to the things spoken by Paul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">15 And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, \u201cIf you have judged me to be <strong>faithful<\/strong> to the Lord, come into my house and stay.\u201d And she prevailed upon us.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The grace of God was given to God-fearing Jews and proselytes.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Acts 13:42\u201343 (NASB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">42 As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">43 Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the <strong>God-fearing<\/strong> proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to <strong>continue in the grace of God<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The New Testament also tells us that God divides between those who fear Him and those who do not, by hearing the prayers of the God-fearers.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">John 9:31 (NASB) \u201cWe know that God does not hear sinners; but <strong>if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The message of salvation is effective in those who fear God.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Acts 13:26 (NASB) \u201cBrethren, sons of Abraham\u2019s family, and <strong>those among you who fear God<\/strong>, to us the message of this salvation has been sent.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">There is not a single reference to a person who hated God, who was given to Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The consistent message of the Scripture<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The consistent message of the Scripture is that those who fear God will come to Jesus and they will continue to come to Jesus as the &#8220;coming ones.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Questions for Calvinists to answer<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">1. Can you show a single Scripture that shows a God-hater is given to Jesus?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">2. How can God&#8217;s giving of people to Jesus be unconditional when God has said he distinguishes between those who serve God and those who don&#8217;t?
